Beach Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Stetson Beach Invitational on Saturday
DELAND, Fla. – On the final day of the Stetson Beach Invitational, the Coastal Carolina Sandy Chants split a pair of contests versus the North Alabama Lions and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts in Deland, Fla.
The Chants defeated North Alabama 4-1 but fell to FGCU 3-2 in their final match of the Stetson Beach Invitational.
Coastal Carolina moved to 15-8 overall on the season.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 4, North Alabama 1
In the opening match of the day, the Chants jumped to the early 1-0 lead over the Lions as the team of Emma Gonzalez and Lucy Campbell defeated Abby Robertson and Sarah Larkin in straight sets 21-17, 21-11 on court No. 5.
On court No. 4, the tandem of Raychel Ehlers and Madison Allred needed all three sets at 21-19, 18-21, 15-12 to take down Natalie Kordt and Jelena Girod to put the Sandy Chants up 2-0. Coastal clinched the match on court No. 3, as the duo of Sarlota Svobodova and Madie Lichty dispatched Martha McLaurin and Selma Robinson 23-21, 21-10.
Meanwhile, the team of Elena Sanchez and Ellie Hanford used all three sets for a 15-21, 21-14, 17-15 win on court No. 2 to push the Chanticleers lead to 4-0 on court No. 2.
On court No. 1, however, the Lions’ Paula Klemperer and Taylor Seney knocked off Sarah Riedell and Martine Kragholm 21-18, 21-14 for the final margin of 4-1.
Match 2: FGCU 3, Coastal Carolina 2
In their final match of the day, the Sandy Chants fell behind early, as FGCU raced out to an 1-0 advantage with Kaitlyn Luebbers and Lexie Hamilton knocking off Allred and Ehlers 21-18, 21-14 on court No. 4.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 2-0 on court No. 5 as Jacqueline Carpenter and Kristina Gluc defeated Gonzalez and Campbell 21-19, 21-16.
Coastal’s Lichty and Svobodova (22-20, 21-13) pulled the Sandy Chants to within one at 2-1 with a win over Dylan Brewer and Nicole De Oliveira on court No. 3, while Kragholm and Riedell evened the match at 2-2 by defeating Kacie Johnson and Maddison Parmelly 21-18, 25-23 in straight sets on court No. 1.
However, Coastal was unable to complete the comeback as Sanchez and Hanford came up short falling 19-21, 21-19, 15-8 to Shelby Beisner and Trinity Rosales on court No. 2.
The Sandy Chants return to the court on Saturday, April 1, as CCU will travel to Wilmington, N.C., to take on host UNCW and the Jacksonville Dolphins in a tri-match.
